Vehicle Description

1950 MG TD Roadster The MG TD was produced from 1949 to August of 1953.  During that period there were many subtle changes, but nothing drastic.  The first MG TDs were manufactured in late 1949, and the model was formally announced in January of 1950.  Only 98 TDs were made in 1949, 2 RHD and 96 LHD.  There were a total of four model years - 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1953, and the models are nowadays referred to as the MG TD, TD2 and TD Mark II.  Thx mg-cars.org  For consignment, a 1950 MG TD showing 2,902 miles which are not actual.  This car was fully restored by well known PA British car expert, Jack Merryman, who finished the car in 2017 when it was enjoyed and driven by our consignor who purchased it in 2010.  Exterior Old English White looks just right on an old English car, its epic design now etched in the minds of Americans since they started showing up in the early 1950's as servicemen and others were intrigued by their unique European design.  That includes long low flowing lines that are highlighted by the fenders rolling like a wave and descending onto a running board as a more narrow and circular fender picks up the rear.  The reverse opening door dips to the rear making opening it practically unnecessary.  Up front red grille slats are like a showy stage curtain framed in a chrome surround that is in beautiful condition, matched by the bumper and bumper guards below.  15-inch steel wheels are painted bright white and wear proper MG hubcaps with a small red logo.  The black canvas top, metalwork, trim, and paint is all stunning and a single touched up horizontal scratch is the lone imperfection we see.  Interior The restoration still looks fresh, starting with the red vinyl door card with their decorative map pockets  and chrome hardware and leading to the stitched bench seat, also in red vinyl, split in the middle to make room for the handbrake.  The banjo style steering wheel is rimmed in taupe plastic which is matched by the center panel insert of the red vinyl wrapped dashboard.  The gauges appear original and unrestored, a touch of history among a refreshed dash that presents nicely with an undulating upper edge that is ultimately classic.   On the floor, a short and simple shifter rises to meet your hand, surrounded by black carpet.   Drivetrain Under the hood covers sits a clean and red 1250cc inline 4 cylinder engine, rated at 54 horsepower and fueled by 2 Su carburetors, backed by a 4-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels and 5.125 gears.  Drum brakes are on all four wheels.  Undercarriage Generally clean underneath, highlighted by the single stainless exhaust and stock style muffler that exits just under the rear bumper.  Very little surface rust is seen but there are oil drops on the pan and fluid on the transmission.  Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the back.   Drive-Ability A quick starter, and after a nice warmup it ran incredibly smoothly and has great snappy pickup.  It handled well and just the open road feel of this car is worth the price of admission with all items working as they should.  While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.  TD's were some of the earliest sports cars raced in the United States and undoubtedly led to the enthusiastic growth of the SCCA, which started in '44 and sanctioned its first race in '48.   Hundreds of MG's were raced over the years and still regularly show up at vintage racing events.  They are, in a word, legendary, and an important part of automotive history in America and beyond.  Here's a very nice, well sorted example that will undoubtedly cause the new owner to walk into the garage in the middle of the night, just to get another look at his/her stunning MG.
